In the quest for peak performance, faster recovery, and even life extension, one technology has been making waves—cryotherapy. Once reserved for elite athletes and biohackers, cryochambers are now gaining mainstream popularity. But what exactly are they, and why is everyone from professional sports teams to wellness enthusiasts stepping into the deep freeze?

What is a Cryochamber?

A cryochamber is a specialized enclosure that exposes the body to extremely cold temperatures, typically ranging from -110°C to -180°C (-166°F to -292°F). The treatment, known as whole-body cryotherapy (WBC), usually lasts between two to four minutes. The process works by rapidly cooling the skin’s surface, triggering physiological responses that may enhance recovery, reduce inflammation, and even boost mental clarity.


The Science Behind Cryotherapy

When exposed to subzero temperatures, the body enters survival mode, constricting blood vessels and directing blood flow to vital organs. This process, known as vasoconstriction, helps flush toxins and metabolic waste from the system. As the body warms up post-session, oxygen-rich blood rushes back to the muscles, potentially accelerating recovery and reducing soreness.

High-end wellness spas and recovery centers now offer cryotherapy sessions alongside treatments like infrared saunas and float tanks.

Is Cryotherapy the Future?

While the benefits of cryochambers are promising, more long-term studies are needed to fully validate their impact. However, with growing demand and continued innovation in cold therapy, cryochambers may soon become as common as gym memberships.

My conclusion is that I'll use it only after heavy training sessions because it costs me €30 per application, which is a lot on top of all my triathlon expenses
